The borough's week

Market Week in the Borough: When Do Your Customers Search?

Stockton High Street has held a market for close to 700 years. The council still runs markets in three town centres on set days. Market days bring people into town, and people in town search on their phones. Here is the borough’s week, with one Google fix for each day.

DayWhat is onWhat people might typeYour fix
MondayBillingham Market in the town centre“cafe Billingham”, “key cutting near me”Check your Monday hours on Google are right.
TuesdayNo council market“open now near me”Reply to last week’s reviews and add one new photo.

ThursdayThornaby Market near the Pavilion Shopping Centre“Thornaby shops open today”Make sure your map pin sits on the right unit.
FridayStockton and Billingham markets, plus Taster Market Fridays for young starters“market stall Stockton Friday”Stall holders: get a free Google profile so buyers can find you after the market packs up.
SaturdayStockton’s busiest market day“things to do Stockton Saturday”Post an offer or event on your Google profile by Friday night.
SundayNo council market. Families head for the riverside.“Sunday lunch Stockton”, “open Sunday near me”Say clearly on Google whether you open or stay shut.

Why the day matters

Being open at the moment someone searches is now one of the five strongest map factors in Whitespark’s 2026 survey of local search experts. If your hours are wrong on a market day, you lose the busiest searches of the week.

Market days from Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, checked 14 October 2026. Search phrases are examples, not measured data.

Castlegate Has Gone and the Waterfront Is Open. What Do Shoppers Ask Now?

The middle of Stockton changed shape in 2026. When a place changes, the questions people ask Google change with it. These are the ones a local shop can answer before anyone else does.

Is Castlegate still there?

No. The 1970s Castlegate Shopping Centre was pulled down, and Stockton Waterfront urban park opened in its place on 20 and 21 June 2026. It joins the High Street to the river. If your firm once traded in Castlegate, check old listings on Google, Yell and Facebook. An old address now sends people to a park.

Where do I park for the High Street now?

Some older tourist pages still list Castlegate as the closest car park. If you run a shop, a cafe or a salon, put up to date parking advice on your own site. That small page can become the answer Google shows.

What is on by the river this weekend?

The council uses the new park for public events. If you trade within a short walk, tie your Google posts to those dates. People planning a day out often book food and drink in the same search.

When is SIRF next year?

Stockton International Riverside Festival ran from 31 July to 2 August 2026. Dates for 2027 have not been announced yet. When they are, add them to your plans early, because festival visitors search for places to eat weeks before they arrive.

Two Trades Make Up More Than a Third of Stockton's Firms

Professional services and construction account for 2,030 of the borough’s 5,780 firms. Their customers look for very different things before they pick up the phone.

Professional, scientific and technical firms
0

Accountants, engineers, surveyors and consultants. A client wants to know who you are before they share their numbers.

What they check: a real name and face, your qualifications, a rough idea of fees and how fast you reply.

What helps: an About page with the owner’s photo, service pages that name the problems you solve, and trade body listings that match your site word for word.

Construction firms
0

Builders, roofers, joiners and electricians. A homeowner wants proof you have done the job before, nearby.

What they check: photos of finished work, which towns you cover and reviews that mention the type of job.

What helps: a service area set on your Google profile, a page for each area you truly work in, and a review request sent the day the job ends.

The next biggest groups are business support (465 firms), food and drink places (430), arts, leisure and personal services (425) and retail (395). Source: Nomis UK Business Counts 2026, Stockton-on-Tees.

Which Agency Is Best for a Small Stockton Business?

There is no single best agency, only the best fit for your size and budget. Stockton has some strong firms. Several work from Fusion Hive on North Shore Road, and the borough is home to large ecommerce agencies too.

We read the top agency pages for this search on 14 October 2026. Only one of eight showed a price. Outrank lists SEO from £300 + VAT a month, which is £360 once VAT is added. The rest asked you to call first.

On Reddit, small firm owners complain about a flood of cold offers for cheap websites built by AI. A low price is not the problem. A price with nothing in writing behind it is.

Can a Stockton Grant Help Pay for Marketing?

Some council schemes have ended. One is still worth asking about. Here is where things stand on 14 October 2026.

Closed

Town Centre Retail Grant

Up to £5,000 for new firms moving into empty units in the town centres of Stockton, Yarm, Norton, Thornaby, Billingham and Ingleby Barwick. The council is not taking applications.

Ask first

Business Investment and Growth Support

The council runs this with backing from Tees Valley Combined Authority’s Indigenous Growth Fund. It is aimed at small and medium firms, sole traders and freelancers who want to grow or work in new ways. Email the council’s invest team to see what it can cover.

We will never tell you a grant pays our bill. Ask the council first, then come back to us with the answer.

Meet Hamza, the Owner, in Durham or on a Call

In 1825, the first public train on the Stockton and Darlington Railway ran from Shildon in County Durham down to Stockton. The two places have been linked ever since. Today the drive from Durham takes less than an hour.

HS Tech Solution belongs to Hamza Shafiq, who lives in Durham. We have no Stockton office, and we will not pretend to have one. You can meet Hamza in Durham, or talk by phone or video call. There is no account manager in the middle. He brings almost five years of hands on work and runs a small team behind him.

Put both sites into Google PageSpeed Insights on your own phone. We tested them in September 2026, and scores move over time. The electrician’s impressions grew, but clicks stayed flat, and we would rather tell you that than hide it. Most of the sites we have built so far are for Australian firms. We have no Stockton client yet, and we will not invent one.

Stockton Business Owners Ask Us

Ten quick answers. Want to talk it through? Ring Hamza on 07474 277315.

Most small UK firms pay between £500 and £5,000 a month, depending on the work. In Stockton, Outrank lists SEO from £360 a month once VAT is added. Our SEO costs £399 a month with VAT included, and our one page websites start at £99 + VAT.

Yes, for the basics. You can set up a Google profile, ask for reviews and post photos yourself for free. Pay for help when the job takes more time than it saves, or when you need a website, ads or SEO done well. Many owners start alone and hire later.

For a small local firm, a fair starting point is a few hundred pounds a month. Below that, ask what work is actually done each month. Our SEO is £399 a month with VAT included and a three month minimum. The paid first month includes a full audit of your site.

Most local firms see the first changes within three to six months. Fixes to your Google profile can show sooner. Busy fields, such as builders or solicitors, often take longer. If your field needs more than our three month minimum, we tell you before you sign anything.

Some help is open, but check first. The council’s retail and shopfront grants are closed. Its Business Investment and Growth Support, backed by Tees Valley Combined Authority, is aimed at small firms, sole traders and freelancers. Email the council’s invest team to ask what it covers before you spend money.

No. Hamza Shafiq, the owner, lives in Durham, less than an hour away by car. You can meet him in Durham, or speak by phone or video call. Most of the work, like Google profiles and websites, is done online, so where we sit does not slow anything down.

Often, yes. A stall needs one page that shows what you sell, which days you trade and how to reach you. That is what our £99 + VAT page covers. If you later want online orders, we quote for a bigger site in writing before any work starts.

Create a free Google Business Profile, verify it and pick the most exact category for your trade. Add true hours, including market days, and clear photos. If you work from home, hide your address and list the towns you serve. Then ask every happy customer for a review.

You do. You buy your domain and hosting in your own name, and we guide you through it, so the logins stay with you. If you ever move to another company, your site and your web address go with you, with nothing held back by us.

It can be, if people search for your service there. Ads can show only to people near you, so a small budget is not spread across all of Teesside. Start small, count the calls and stop if each enquiry costs more than a job is worth.
