Ecommerce Websites for UK Businesses, Built to Actually Sell

A new WooCommerce store, a hosted platform you have outgrown, or a checkout that is quietly losing you sales. We are transparent on costs and time frames from the first call, and we do not use jargon you did not ask for.

Looking specifically for Shopify? This page covers ecommerce broadly and leans on WooCommerce. Shopify has its own page, with the real monthly platform costs set out in full: Shopify website design.

Selected work

Live sites you can open and judge for yourself

Trades, clinics, shops, transport firms and professional services. More than 200 websites since 2022, for businesses from one person trades to teams of fifty. Open any site below on your phone, see how fast it loads and how it reads. That is the standard your site gets.

Most of the work above sits with clients in Australia. We work with businesses across the UK on exactly the same basis, and you deal with the two of us either way.

Migrating from Squarespace or WooCommerce.

Moving Off a Platform You Have Outgrown

Most people who put off a migration are not worried about the new platform. They are worried about the site going down, orders getting lost, or Google forgetting their pages exist. Here is how we make it stress-free.

1

A full inventory of what you have now

Old web addresses redirected to their new equivalents, so your Google rankings and any bookmarked links carry across.

2

The new store built on a staging site

The new store is built and checked properly before it ever replaces the old one. Nothing goes live half finished.

3

A switchover date agreed in advance

We tell you the exact time the switch happens, usually outside business hours, so there is no surprise downtime.

4

Order history and customers carried over

Product catalogue, customer accounts and order history migrated, not left behind on the old platform.

5

Training on the admin, not just a password

We show you round the new admin so day one does not feel like starting from scratch.

Every ecommerce project includes this as standard.

What is included in an ecommerce build

Whether it is a new store or a migration, the same standard applies. Nothing here is held back for an upgrade.

Product pages that actually convert

Clear photos, honest descriptions and a layout that gets someone from browsing to checkout without friction.

Payment gateways set up and tested

Card payments, Shop Pay and Apple Pay configured and tested with real transactions before launch, not just a demo mode.

Shipping and postage rules built around you

UK and international rates set up to match how you actually ship, not a platform’s generic defaults.

Mobile checkout that works first time

More than half your customers will buy on a phone. We test the full checkout on a real device, not just a browser preview.

Discount codes and abandoned cart set up

Ready to run a sale or claw back a lost sale the moment you need to, not something you have to figure out later.

Apps kept to a sensible minimum

Every extra app slows the store down. We only add what earns its place, and explain what each one actually does.

Analytics connected from day one

Google Analytics and your store’s own reports set up so you can see what is selling, not just guess.

Full store ownership

The store, domain and data are yours from day one, not held on an agency plan you cannot leave.

No lock-in contract

Ongoing help if you want it, month to month. If you would rather manage it yourself, that is fine too.

How that compares

UK affordable web design typically runs five hundred to three thousand pounds. An online store with real product management sits toward the top of that range, because a shop is doing more work than a brochure site.
Migrations are quoted the same way as a new build, usually similar to our Growth tier, since most of the work is in moving data safely, not designing from scratch.

What this does not include

Any platform subscription, which you pay the platform directly, or paid ad spend, that is a separate service. We are transparent about this before you commit to anything.

Ecommerce process.

How we build or migrate your online store

Four steps, three to eight weeks depending on size. You know what is happening at every one of them.

Step 1 · Scope call

What you sell, how many products, and whether this is a new build or a move from another platform.

Step 2 · Store built in private

Products, payments, shipping and design set up and tested before anyone but you sees it.

Step 3 · You review and test

You place a real test order. We fix whatever needs fixing before launch, not after.

Step 4 · Launch and handover

The store goes live, old links redirect, and we walk you through the admin.

Choosing an ecommerce developer.

How to tell a good ecommerce developer from a bad one

You do not need to take our word for any of this. Ask anyone quoting you the same things.

Ask to see a real test order, not a demo

A store that looks finished can still have a broken checkout. Ask them to place an actual test order and show you it working.

Ask who owns the store and the hosting

It should be registered in your name from day one. If an agency owns the account, you cannot simply walk away if things go wrong.

Ask how migration downtime is handled

A vague answer here usually means no real plan. There should be a specific window, agreed with you in advance, not a surprise.

Ask what happens to your old web addresses

If old product and category pages are not redirected, you lose the Google rankings you already built, and customers hit dead links.
Ecommerce questions.

Questions we are asked before every project

Most of our Shopify projects fall between the Starter and Growth tiers, a fixed one-off fee agreed before we start. You also pay Shopify directly for their monthly subscription, which we are upfront about from the first call.

Yes. We build and test the new store privately first, then switch over in a short planned window, usually outside business hours, so there is no meaningful downtime.

Not if it is done properly. Every old page address is mapped and redirected to its new Shopify equivalent before launch, which is the step that gets skipped when rankings disappear.

It depends on your setup. Shopify suits most small to medium shops well. If you already run WordPress and want ecommerce added to it, WooCommerce can make more sense, see our WordPress development service.

If Shopify turns out to be the better fit, everything about how we build on it is set out on our Shopify website design page, including what the platform itself costs you each month.

Three to four weeks for a straightforward store, six to eight for a large catalogue or a complex migration.

No. The one-off build is the one-off build. Any ongoing help afterwards runs month to month, with no penalty for leaving.

Yes. The Shopify account, your domain and all your data are registered in your name from day one.

What does an online shop cost to build?

A shop needs more than a set of pages, so it is scoped rather than sold from a list. The two page based prices below cover the site around the shop. The shop itself is quoted once we know the catalogue and how you take payment.

What every price includes

Custom design rather than a stock template, mobile and tablet layouts, a working contact form, Google Maps, basic on page SEO, an SSL certificate and speed tuning. You own the domain, the hosting login and the site itself.

Priced separately

Written content, licensed photography, hosting and domain renewals, online shops, booking systems and any pages beyond the number agreed. We tell you the cost of these before work starts, never after.

Looking after the site afterwards starts at £25 a month. Updates, backups, monitoring and security, billed monthly with no minimum term.
