Local search help for Boro firms
SEO in Middlesbrough starts with a simple test. Does Google know exactly where your business is? Many local listings still say Cleveland, others say North Yorkshire, and some say Teesside. We fix the details Google trusts, then build the pages and reviews that win calls. It costs £399 a month with VAT included.
Which one is your business?
Google matches your name, address and phone across the web. Three versions look like three firms.
Checked on Google, 6 October 2026
Ask five people in Boro what county they live in and you may get five answers. One local on Reddit called it “clear as mud”. That is fine in the pub. It is a problem online, because Google compares your details on every site that lists you.
We searched Google UK for a common local trade on 6 October 2026. We found four labels for the same town:
Where we saw it: Yell lists a Middlesbrough agency as “Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire”.
Why it happens: Middlesbrough sits in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.
Where we saw it: A heating firm on page one calls itself a “Heating Engineer in Cleveland”.
Why it happens: Cleveland was a county from 1974 to 1996. Many people still use it.
Where we saw it: The Welcome to Yorkshire website lists Middlesbrough plumbers.
Why it happens: Tourism sites group the town with Yorkshire.
Where we saw it: Teesside University’s own address line reads “Tees Valley, Middlesbrough”.
Why it happens: The Tees Valley Combined Authority runs regional services.
None of these is wrong. The trouble starts when your own listings disagree with each other.
The fix
What we found on page one
We searched “plumber middlesbrough” on 6 October 2026. Checkatrade, Yell, Trustatrader, MyBuilder and WaterSafe took five of the ten main results. Most local plumbers only showed up on the map.
That is normal for trade searches. Directories have thousands of pages and years of links. A one page site rarely beats them for the main term.
So how did one plumber’s own website make page one?
You do not need to beat the directories everywhere. Get listed on them with matching details, then aim your own pages at searches they ignore, such as “boiler repair Acklam” or “emergency plumber Marton”.
Prices with VAT shown
We read the published prices of Middlesbrough firms on 6 October 2026. Some leave VAT out, and many show no price at all. Here is what each page says.
| Provider | Published monthly price | With VAT | Contract |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outrank | From £300 + VAT local, £500 + VAT regional | £360 / £600 | Not stated |
| DUO Digital | “£100 or £1,000” to suit budgets | VAT not stated | Not stated |
| seo-middlesbrough.uk | £500 to £1,000 for local work | VAT not stated | No lock in |
| Visionary Marketing | £1,300 to £2,500 | VAT not stated | Month to month |
| CTO Digital | Pay as you go, no price shown | Not shown | No contract |
| HS Tech Solution | £399 | £399, VAT included | 3 month minimum |
These are the prices shown on 6 October 2026. Firms update them, so confirm on their own sites.
We are not the cheapest. We are also not the only firm without a long contract. Our minimum is three months, because local work takes that long to show. We tell you this before you sign, not after.
What Google’s AI wanted to know
On 6 October 2026, we asked Google’s AI Mode for the best SEO agency for a small Middlesbrough business. It named three firms. Then it asked three questions back:
Your site should say it in plain words on the first screen. “Plumber” is clearer than “home solutions”.
List the areas you cover. Name them, such as Acklam, Linthorpe, Marton, Stockton or Redcar.
For a service firm, show your prices or a “from” price. Two of the three firms the AI named publish prices or terms on their pages.
AI tools quote what your site states clearly. They cannot guess what you leave out.
Where Boro searches start
Different parts of town search in different ways. Each one needs something slightly different from your listing.
21,569 students study here, and about half come from outside the North East (Teesside University, 2024/25). Many are new to the town. They search “near me” on a phone and trust map reviews.
What helps: Correct opening hours, photos, and replies to reviews.
The South Tees trust says more than a million patients and visitors come through its hospitals each year. Visitors search for food, parking, taxis and gifts nearby.
What helps: A profile that says how close you are and when you open.
The ground seats about 34,000. On home game days, fans search for a parmo, a pint or parking.
What helps: Matchday hours and posts on your Google profile the day before.
Google suggests searches such as “plumbers in Acklam”. People here often add the area name to a trade.
What helps: A page or section for each area you truly cover, with real detail.
Shoppers in the Hill Street and Cleveland Centre area check if a shop is open before they walk over.
What helps: Special hours set for bank holidays and Christmas.
Google’s latest change
Google started a spam update on 24 September 2026, according to its Search Status Dashboard. Spam updates target bought links, copied pages and keyword stuffing.
Some of this is easy to spot. Google’s Business Profile rules say your profile name must match your real business name. Adding “Best SEO Middlesbrough” to it breaks the rules, even when it seems to work for a while.
Ask any provider three things
The three month minimum, explained
Weeks 1 to 4
We check your name, address and phone on every listing we can find, then fix them to one version. We tidy your Google profile and pick the right categories.
Weeks 5 to 8
We improve your main service pages and add one local page. You get a simple way to ask happy customers for reviews.
Weeks 9 to 12
We show you calls, clicks and map positions against week one. Then you decide whether to carry on.

Who does the work
HS Tech Solution belongs to Hamza Shafiq, who does the SEO work himself. He lives in Durham, about 40 minutes away by car, and meets clients there in person. He also talks by phone or video call. The person you speak to first is the person who does your SEO and sends your report.
Numbers, not promises
For an electrician client, Google impressions rose from 375 to 4,600, and the average position reached 2.7 in Google Search Console. Clicks stayed flat over the same period, and we say so plainly. More people saw the business, but that did not yet turn into more clicks.
Honest note
Most of our clients trade in Australia. We do not have a Middlesbrough SEO client to show you yet. The method is the same: clean listings, clear pages and honest reports.
Where we help
We offer SEO services in Middlesbrough town centre (TS1), Middlehaven and North Ormesby (TS2 and TS3), Linthorpe and Acklam (TS5), Marton, Nunthorpe and Ormesby (TS7), and Hemlington and Coulby Newham (TS8). We also help firms in Stockton, Thornaby and Redcar who want Boro customers too.
Quick answers
On the local price pages we read on 6 October 2026, monthly SEO ran from about £360 with VAT to £2,500 before VAT. Several firms show no price. Ours is £399 a month with VAT included and a three month minimum. Always ask whether the price you are shown includes VAT.
Local SEO for one small firm in one town usually costs less than national work. That is because it focuses on your Google profile, listings, reviews and a few pages. In Middlesbrough, published local plans start at about £360 a month with VAT. Ours is £399 with VAT included.
Pay for clear work, not big promises. A small firm in one town rarely needs a £2,000 plan. Ask what will be done each month, who does it, and how results are reported. If a provider cannot answer in plain words, keep looking before you sign anything.
Yes, for most local firms. People still search Google for trades, shops and services, and Google’s AI answers take facts from websites and profiles. A firm with clean listings, good reviews and clear pages gives search tools something to show. Without that, the directories take the click.
Yes, you can do a lot yourself. Fix your Google profile, match your address everywhere, add photos and ask for reviews. Those steps cost nothing. Paid help makes sense when you lack the time, or when your listings are a mess across dozens of sites.
They do different jobs. Ads bring calls as soon as you pay, and they stop when the money stops. SEO builds over months and keeps working. Many Boro firms start with SEO on their Google profile, then add a small ads budget for busy seasons or a new service.
It can help. It drafts page text, suggests questions and explains terms. It cannot fix your listings on Yell, update your Google profile, collect reviews or check your map position. Use it for ideas, then check every fact it gives you about your own business and town.
Use your town and full TS postcode, and leave the county out. Royal Mail says a county is not needed. What matters most for Google is that the same address appears on every listing. Mixed versions make your business look like more than one firm.
Directories have huge sites and years of links, so they often win broad searches such as “plumber middlesbrough”. You can still win on the map and on area searches. Match your details on those directories, gather reviews, and build pages for the streets and areas you serve.
Our minimum term is three months, and we tell you before you sign if your trade needs longer. Yes, we help firms in Stockton, Thornaby and Redcar who want Middlesbrough customers. We set your profile’s service areas correctly and build pages for the places you really serve.
